Letter to John Carpenter Eakle [manuscript], 1862 July 13.

Gillett describes his regiment's role in Jakcson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign and the Seven Days Battle of 1862. He describes fights at McDowell, Cross Keys, Port Republic, and Gaines Mill and gives casualty counts for his regiment and numbers of prisoners and guns taken. Topics of interest in the letter include southern sentiment in Winchester, the burning of [chained slaves?] in a fire set by Union troops in Winchester, death of Captain [Benjamin T.?] Walton, Union disregard for a flag of truth over a burial detail and hospital, Union fortifications on the Peninsula, the coffee mill [Agar] gun, destruction of a bridge over the Chickahominy, praise to the Lord for victory, and homesickness for Bath County.
